Job Duties

Participates in reviews, inspections, and analyses to assure compliance with environmental health laws, programs, and regulations related to food service, onsite wastewater, culinary water, public swimming pools, nuisance complaints, subdivision infrastructure, indoor clean air, solid waste/landfill, hazardous waste, recreation facilities, schools, general sanitation, day-care facilities, etc.; conducts risk assessment of environmental issues, recommends appropriate remedies; utilizes various planning models to identify trends and forecast future needs and impact.

Special Qualifications:

  • Must possess a current Utah Driver License.
  • Must become a licensed Environmental Health Scientist in training within 60 days
  • Must become a licensed Environmental Health Scientist by the Utah Department of Professional Licensing (DOPL) within 1 year of hire
  • Must become certified as an inspector in various aspects of environmental health as required by various state regulations or agencies

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited program in a college or university with major study in one of the following: agronomy; biology, botany, chemistry, environmental health science, geology, microbiology, physics, physiology, sanitary engineering, or zoology.

OR

Evidence of a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited program in a college or university including: a college or university level algebra or math course; and 30 semester hours of 45 quarter hours from at least three of the curriculums listed above.

Work Schedule

  • Monday thru Thursday 7:30-5:30, Friday from 8-5 with every other Friday off

Skills/Abilities

Working knowledge of federal and state regulations governing food quality and safety, air quality, water quality, wastewater, and hazardous waste; general and standard laboratory procedures, instruments, measurements, and terminology; hazards associated with various chemicals, equipment, organic and inorganic substances; the nature and cause of various communicable diseases and other diseases linked to environmental health conditions; various environmental health resources available in rural areas; various funding sources available for environmental health management; public relations skills; general county operations including applicable laws and regulations; computer operations and various software applications related to word processing, data processing, and spreadsheets.

Work Environment

May be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
